The West Michigan Regional Cancer and Blood Center (WMRCBC) is now offering a monthly breast cancer support group at no charge. The group meets at the WMRCBC on the first Wednesday of every month and is open to anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The group was formed and is currently led by a breast cancer survivor. Each month the group meets and discusses anything of concern, including accepting diagnosis, treatment options and the emotional process during this journey.
“It is normal for a cancer diagnosis to turn someone’s world upside down. With breast cancer there are physical, social, emotional, spiritual and financial changes occurring which disrupt what each woman once considered a normal way of life. It takes time to process all that is happening and time for each individual to discover a new sense of normal,” said Paula Wietrzykowski, group leader and social worker of WMRCBC.
The group setting is laid back and relaxed to provide a comfortable and accepting environment for supportive and encouraging discussion.
“It is important for women with breast cancer to realize they are not alone. To be in a safe environment listening and sharing with other women who face similar challenges can be very beneficial,” said Wietrzykowski.
WMRCBC cares about providing opportunities to connect patients together in a supportive atmosphere.
